Kalamkari
Jonalgadda Niranjan
Jonalgadda Niranjan is the 4th generation of his family to follow the tradition of Kalamkari painting. His lineage is illustrious with several of his forefather’s works in museums across the world, including at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. His great-grandfather is credited with the revival of this art in Srikalahasti and Niranjan continues his family’s legacy. In fact, he not only trains, and employs, local tribal women in the intricacies of this art, but also works to bring Kalamkari into the public consciousness by taking his work into public spaces such as airports, as well as into the world of fashion and home décor. His work uses traditional techniques and handmade pigments and dyes. He’s best known for his spectacular paintings of the Tree of Life.
He has participated in exhibitions and conducted workshops across India and overseas and has won several awards for his work.
